Black and Brown Summit

Highli
ne College will be hosting its first ever 2020 Black & Brown Male Virtual Summit Series! The 11th Annual Black & Brown Male Summit Presents: “Enough is Enough” Virtual Summit Series, every Monday during the month of November (11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, and 11/30) from 11:30am to 3pm each day. Each week will have a different theme, focus, and speakers. This is a free event that is designed to empower and encourage our young men of color in the local school districts to excel in life and academics. As you all may already know, the statistics for our young males of color (African American, Latino, Pacific Islander, Asian, African, and Native American) are beyond belief in regard to them achieving in the current education system. We know that there are many barriers and challenges that they are faced with, in and out of the school environment. The summit’s objectives are to help the young men:

·       Critique social structures that inhibit black/brown young men from being successful in education

·       Highlight the achievements in spite of the obstacles/barriers that they face

·       Contextualize their self-identity socially, culturally, historically, and politically by giving the young men a sense of self and value of self

Young men: your presence and voices are needed more than ever, after witnessing the racist acts and assaults communities of color have endured and continue to face daily. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have to hold the summit in a different format this year and it is important that you pay attention to detail and commit yourself to the series. We ask that you come ready to listen, learn, and leave encouraged to spread the knowledge and information you receive with others. The summit desires to hold a space for authentic and impactful dialogue. We are looking forward to having you!

We acknowledge that students may be overwhelmed with virtual school and we’re asking them to attend the summit during the school day. As an incentive for attending the summit series, students will have the opportunity to earn two college credits (College 100: College Success Seminar). Students must attend all five days to be eligible to receive college credit. More details will be sent out after registration opens. We are hopeful that this opportunity will encourage the young men to attend all days of the summit and we’re especially thankful for the schools supporting this event and the students attending.

Please note: The Summit will be held virtually through Zoom. It will be very important for the students to provide a valid email address to receive the links for each day of the Summit. Registration will open on October 19th! Due to our online capacity this year, the summit will be reserved for students only.
